Suppression of Turbulence in the Large Plasma Device via Rotation

چکیده

Suppression of turbulence has been observed in the Large Plasma Device in the presence of flow shear. Using an iris-like setup of biasable metal plates called limiters, azimuthal flow near the edge of the device was achieved. The limiters extend from the inner surface of the device inward, 28.5cm from the central axis, and are set from 0 V to 200 V above the anode. Multiple probing methods including the use of a Mach probe, a nine-tip Langmuir probe, and a fast camera make it possible to create radial profiles of the flow, vθ, and the electron temperature, Te, among others.

Generation of Plasma Rotation in a Tokamak by Absorption of Fast Alfven Waves

Control of rotation in tokamak pla;mas provides a method for suppressing fine-scale turbulent transport by velocity shear and for stabilizing large-scale magnetohydrodynamic instabilities via a close-fitting conducting shell. The experimental discovery of rotation in a plaslna heated by the fast-wave minority ion cyclotron process is important both as a potential control method for a fusion rea...

Momentum Transport in Electron-Dominated Spherical Torus Plasmas

The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) operates between 0.35 and 0.55 T, which, when coupled to up to 7 MW of neutral beam injection, leads to central rotation velocities in excess of 300 km/s and ExB shearing rates up to 1 MHz. This level of ExB shear can be up to a factor of five greater than typical linear growth rates of long-wavelength ion (e.g., ITG) modes, at least partially supp...

Turbulence and transport suppression scaling with flow shear on the Large Plasma Device

Continuous control over azimuthal flow and shear in the edge of the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) [W. Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Instr. 62, 2875 (1991)] has been achieved using a biasable limiter. This flow control has allowed a careful study of the effect of flow shear on pressure-gradient-driven turbulence and particle transport in LAPD. The combination of externally controllable shear in a turb...

Effect of secondary convective cells on turbulence intensity profiles, flow generation, and transport

This paper reports the results of gyrokinetic simulation studies of ion temperature gradient driven turbulence which investigate the role of non-resonant modes in turbulence spreading, turbulence regulation, and self-generated plasma rotation. Non-resonant modes, which are those without a rational surface within the simulation domain, are identified as nonlinearly driven, radially extended conv...
